News from the Girls' Brigade

Any girl from P1 upwards will be very welcome to join.

During the last session, the Explorers learned all about "Sharing". The Juniors' subjects were Jesus learning to serve, Street Games, Crafts and Charities. They all made money boxes in the shape of goats and saved up money for Christian Aid. From the Internet they downloaded patterns for an African village which they made up. This was on display in the Church. The girls took part in the Children's Service from the World Day of Prayer. On the final evening they held a Beetle Drive and the money raised was used to buy three pigs and sixteen ducks through Christian Aid.

Children's Holiday Club - 30th June-4th July. 9.45am

Along with St Michael's Parish Church & St Martin's Episcopal Church, a children's club is held in St Martin's halls.

During 2006 the morning started with a parachute game - after which the adults really needed a shot of caffeine! Shrieks of delight came from the children as the adults shrieked with horror at being trapped under the parachute. Not for the faint-hearted. The children then split into groups where they baked things like "friendship" biscuits, drew posters relating to the theme of creation and all used artistic licence to decorate a papier-maché cow, such as those seen during the Edinburgh Festival. The cow was reported and photographed in the "Gorgie & Dalry Gazette", then on show at the Art & Craft Exhibition at St Martin's Church. There was also much singing and games.

Talking about parachutes inspired a trip down memory lane.
One of the helpers mentioned that the last time she had seen a parachute was in her granny's garrett where it lay waiting to be made into knickers and various underwear items. Times do not change, as her poor granny was driven demented by her cousins (not herself note) trying to jump off the wash-house roof with a parachute full of holes!

The webmaster also remembers her mother making underskirts from parachutes. Fortunately she didn't attempt to try out the parachutes as she lived on the top flat of a tenement!

The Guild

Members, and their friends, have been busy knitting blankets and cardigans which had been handed in to EMMS to be sent abroad. Any old spectacles would be welcomed as EMMS can use them.
